UNTO THIS LAST

"UNTO this last" -- what is there in this Word
Should so betray the grasping World and me
That any other meaning is prefer'd
Than the plain truth, "This last as unto thee"?

From time unharness'd, and to service dead,
And the day's labour ended, -- shall we then
Find our work judged by "time," and not as said
By "quality," and twist His Word again?

Be honest then and quit the vulger crew
That envious think, "how much is done," the test,
And not, "how well 'tis done," and try to do,
As if "this last" were you, your simple best.
